Cleistothecial Ascomycetes from Japan - A Taxonomical Review

Abstract
During the past two decades, the data of ascomycetous microfungi which are encountered frequently in Japan and the Pan-Pacific Asia have been accumulated quickly, although most North American on European mycologists have neglected these fungal distribution in Asia even in the case of world monographs. Recently Benny and Kimbrough (1980) published a synopsis of the orders and families of Plectomycetes (cleistothecial Ascomycetes) and they cited our 44 reports on the cleistothecial Ascomycetes. Also in $quot;Compendium of Soil Fungi$quot;, Domsch, Gams and Anderson (1980) referred our 18 reports on soil-inhabiting Ascomycetes including the cleistothecial taxa.
Fungi are used widely in food and pharmaceutical industries in Japan, and the extensive collecting and identifying of Aspergillus and Penicillium (notably the koji molds) resulted in a number of monographs and papers dealing with revisions of these taxa. By contrast, the cleistothecial Ascomycetes had been little studied in Japan, as was evidenced by the number of papers published. Only a few teleomorphs of Aspergillus and Penicillium, Monascus spp., and some soil-inhabiting Ascomycetes had been studied taxonomically, when my survey on the Japanese Ascomycetes was initiated. Thus the attempts to culture, sporulate, identify, and consider connections between teleomorphic and anamorphic states have been exciting and challenging to me and a number of students.
Taxonomic data and morphological characters of the following cleistothecial Ascomycetes are discussed with emphasis on recently described taxa.
